Earth Day is a great opportunity for students to learn about caring for the environment. In the past 50 years, humans have consumed more resources that in all previous history, and children and youth play a big role in the conservation of natural resources.

In order to create a healthy, sustainable environment for future generations, children must learn environmentally friendly habits at an early age.

Here are 5 ways to teach students to go green:

  • Water Conservation. 780 million people across the world lack access to clean water, and it’s becoming increasingly limited in the United States. Check out DC Water for Kids for cartoons, activities, lessons and workbooks to teach students about water and protecting our supply.
  • Recycling. Effective recycling helps to control environment issues, such as air, water and land pollution. Check out this recycling lesson or try a fun recycling activity to teach students about the importance of recycling and using recyclable products.
  • Conserve Energy. Many children may not know what energy is and why they should use it efficiently. Energy Kids is a great resource for students to learn about energy and its sources through fun lessons, games and activities.
  • Global Warming. The world’s climate has changed drastically over the past century as a direct or indirect result of our activities. Climate Kids is an educational website with activities, resources and games to teach children about climate change.
  • Wildlife Conservation. Animals are also affected by our environmental habits. San Diego Zoo Kids allows children to explore the conservation of animals and their habitats with games, activities, lessons and videos.
